The Industry University Research Center, Inc., commonly known as INDUNIV, is a non-profit organization (501(c)(3) status) established in 1985 and primarily located in Puerto Rico, USA. It operates as a member-supported consortium and serves as the leading advocate and strategic driver for the life sciences ecosystem in the region. INDUNIV's central activity revolves around its mission to develop the necessary strategies and action plans that promote the development of the knowledge economy through innovation. It works to position Puerto Rico as a global best practices location of choice for life sciences enterprises. The organization???s focus areas encompass a wide spectrum of the life sciences, including pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology, medical devices, health IT/digital health care, and allied industries.
The consortium's activities are executed through several strategic pillars:
- Strategic Planning and Policy Advocacy: INDUNIV develops strategies and road maps to formulate public policy and advocates for its implementation with government entities. This includes working to enhance the island's competitiveness for attracting manufacturing, research and development (R&D) activities, and promoting the knowledge economy. A specific historical advocacy effort involved achieving significant progress for the industry by advocating for the elimination of the Health Department???s Registry of Drug Manufacturers and Distributors.
- Ecosystem Development and Facilitation: It acts as a relentless promoter and facilitator for the development of centers of excellence, technology zones, and incubators. These efforts are designed to foster the value chain for innovation through the commercialization of products, particularly in areas like advanced and continuous manufacturing.
- Global Alliances and Representation: INDUNIV serves as the official affiliate organization for the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO-CSBA) in Puerto Rico. In this capacity, it coordinates studies, best practices, and organizes the Puerto Rico delegation and pavilion at the annual BIO International Convention, a role it has maintained for over two decades.
