PLD Space (Payload Aerospace S.L.)
PLD Space (Payload Aerospace S.L.) is a pioneering Spanish aerospace company dedicated to providing orbital and suborbital launch services for small satellites. Founded in 2011 by Ra?l Torres and Ra?l Verd? in Elche, Spain, the company has emerged as a key player in Europe's burgeoning "NewSpace" sector. Its core objective is to democratize access to space by developing reusable, reliable, and cost-effective launch vehicles, thereby serving the growing global market for small satellite deployments.
The company's philosophy is deeply rooted in vertical integration, controlling every phase of its rocket development, from initial design and manufacturing to testing and eventual launch operations. This approach allows for greater agility, control over quality, and faster iteration cycles. A central tenet of PLD Space's strategy is reusability, a critical factor in reducing the cost of space access and increasing launch frequency. By designing its launch vehicles for recovery and reuse from the outset, PLD Space aims to establish a sustainable and commercially viable launch cadence.
Continue…In October 2023, PLD Space achieved a historic milestone with the successful maiden flight of its MIURA 1 suborbital rocket. This launch, which took place from the El Arenosillo Test Centre (CEDEA) in Huelva, Spain, marked the first time a private company in Europe had successfully launched a rocket into space. This achievement not only validated the company's core technologies but also positioned Spain as one of the few nations with indigenous space launch capabilities.
PLD Space operates from several key locations. Its headquarters and primary manufacturing facilities are in Elche. The company owns and operates the largest private rocket engine test facility in Europe, located at Teruel Airport. Launches of its suborbital vehicle occur from southern Spain, while orbital missions are planned to launch from the Guiana Space Centre (CSG) in Kourou, French Guiana, a major European spaceport.
Products and Services
PLD Space's portfolio is centered around its MIURA family of launch vehicles and the proprietary TEPREL liquid rocket engines that power them. The company offers end-to-end launch services tailored to the needs of the small satellite industry.
MIURA 1
The MIURA 1 is a single-stage, suborbital, and recoverable launch vehicle. It serves as both a commercial platform for microgravity research and a technology demonstrator for its larger orbital counterpart, the MIURA 5. Approximately 70% of the technology developed for MIURA 1 is directly applicable to the MIURA 5, making it a crucial stepping stone in the company's development roadmap.
Key Specifications and Purpose:
- Height: 12.5 meters
- Diameter: 0.7 meters
- Payload Capacity: 100 kg
- Mission: To provide a flight environment for scientific experiments and technology validation in microgravity conditions for several minutes.
- Reusability: The entire vehicle is designed to be recovered via a parachute system after splashing down in the ocean, allowing for post-flight analysis and refurbishment for future missions.
- Propulsion: Powered by a single TEPREL-B engine.
The successful flight of MIURA 1 provided invaluable flight data on engine performance, trajectory control, and vehicle behavior, directly feeding into the final design and qualification of the MIURA 5.
MIURA 5
The MIURA 5 is a two-stage orbital launch vehicle designed to place small satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This rocket is the company's primary commercial offering, aimed at providing dedicated and rideshare launch opportunities for the small satellite market.
Key Specifications:
- Height: 35.7 meters
- Diameter: 2 meters
- Payload Capacity: Up to 1,080 kg to LEO.
- First Stage: The first stage is powered by five TEPREL-C engines and is designed to be reusable. After stage separation, it will perform a propulsive landing maneuver to be recovered at sea.
- Second Stage: The second stage is expendable and powered by a single vacuum-optimized version of the TEPREL-C engine.
- Kick Stage (Optional): An optional third stage, or kick stage, can be integrated to provide enhanced precision for satellite deployment into multiple, distinct orbits.
TEPREL Liquid Rocket Engines
The propulsive force behind the MIURA family is the TEPREL (Tecnolog?a Espa?ola de Propulsi?n Reutilizable para el Espacio) engine series. This family of liquid-propellant rocket engines, which burn kerosene (RP-1) and liquid oxygen (LOX), is developed entirely in-house.
- TEPREL-B: This is a pressure-fed engine that generates approximately 30 kN of thrust. It is the flight-proven engine used on the MIURA 1 vehicle.
- TEPREL-C: A more advanced and powerful engine designed for the MIURA 5. It utilizes a gas-generator cycle and incorporates a turbopump to achieve higher performance. The sea-level version produces 190 kN of thrust, while the vacuum-optimized variant for the second stage generates 75 kN.
Launch Services
PLD Space offers a comprehensive suite of launch services designed for flexibility and customer focus.
- Dedicated Launches: Customers can procure an entire MIURA 5 launch for a specific mission, allowing for customized orbital parameters and launch schedules.
- Rideshare Missions: To accommodate smaller payloads and offer greater cost-efficiency, PLD Space provides rideshare options, aggregating multiple customer payloads on a single launch.
- Mission Integration and Support: The company works closely with its clients throughout the entire process, from initial payload compatibility assessments to physical integration and pre-launch preparations.
- Multi-Launch Site Capability: With launch sites in Spain and French Guiana, PLD Space can offer access to a wide range of orbital inclinations, from equatorial to sun-synchronous orbits, catering to diverse mission requirements.
