Slate Auto: A New American EV Company Redefining Affordability and Customization
Slate Auto is a new and disruptive American electric vehicle manufacturer focused on delivering radically affordable, customizable, and reliable transportation to the mass market. Headquartered in Troy, Michigan, USA, with a design studio in California and a manufacturing facility in Indiana, Slate emerged from stealth mode in April 2025 with significant backing from high-profile investors, including Jeff Bezos. The company was founded by former Amazon consumer CEO Jeff Wilke with the mission to challenge the trend of increasingly expensive and complex electric vehicles. Slate's core philosophy is to put power back into the hands of consumers by offering a simplified, durable, and highly personalizable "blank slate" platform, starting with its first vehicle, the Slate Truck.

Core Business: Manufacturing a "Blank Slate" for the People
Slate Auto's primary business is the design, manufacturing, and direct-to-consumer sale of electric vehicles. The company's entire strategy is a direct repudiation of the current EV market's trajectory towards luxury and high technology. Instead of complex software and premium features, Slate focuses on a "less is more" approach to achieve a dramatically lower cost of ownership and increase reliability. The business model is built on three foundational pillars:
- Extreme Simplification: By producing a single vehicle configuration from the factory with minimal standard features, Slate dramatically reduces manufacturing complexity and cost.
- Radical Customization: The company empowers owners to "make it" their own through a vast ecosystem of accessories and do-it-yourself (DIY) upgrade paths.
- American Re-industrialization: Slate is committed to a U.S.-based supply chain and manufacturing process, repurposing existing industrial facilities to build its vehicles.
Products and Services: The Slate Truck and a Universe of Accessories
The flagship product offered by Slate Auto is the Slate Truck, an all-electric, two-seat pickup designed for ultimate utility and personalization.
The Slate Truck Platform:
The truck itself is a masterpiece of simplification, designed to be a durable and reliable base for whatever the owner needs it to be.
* Target Pricing: The Slate Truck is expected to be priced under $28,000, with a target net price of less than $20,000 after applying U.S. federal EV incentives, making it one of the most affordable new vehicles available.
* Minimalist Standard Features: The base model comes standard with manual roll-down windows, steel wheels, basic HVAC knobs, and no built-in infotainment or audio system. Instead, it features a universal mount for a phone or tablet, allowing users to bring their own familiar technology.
* Durable, Paintless Body: The truck's exterior panels are made from a dent- and scratch-resistant injection-molded polypropylene composite material. It comes in a single factory color: gray. This eliminates the costly and environmentally impactful automotive painting process.
* Powertrain and Performance: The standard rear-wheel-drive truck is equipped with a 52.7-kWh battery pack, targeting a range of approximately 150 miles. It utilizes the NACS charging port and can fast-charge from 20% to 80% in under 30 minutes. An optional accessory battery pack of 84.3-kWh is available to extend the range to a targeted 240 miles.
Services and Customization Ecosystem:
The true product extends beyond the base vehicle. Slate's primary service is enabling near-limitless personalization.
* Over 100 Accessories: At launch, Slate will offer a catalog of more than 100 accessories. These range from functional upgrades like different wheel and tire packages, lift kits, and lowering kits, to aesthetic customizations.
* Vehicle Wraps: Instead of paint, owners can personalize their truck's color and appearance using vinyl wraps. Slate offers this service at three different price levels, and the design encourages owners or third-party shops to easily wrap, unwrap, and rewrap the vehicle.
* The SUV Conversion Kit: Perhaps the most innovative offering is the flat-pack accessory SUV Kit. This allows an owner to transform the two-seat pickup into a five-seat SUV. The kit includes a roof panel for the bed, a rear bench seat, a roll cage, and additional airbags.
* "Slate University" and DIY Support: The company actively encourages owners to perform their own upgrades. It will provide a series of online instructional videos walking them through the process of installing everything from power windows to the full SUV kit. For those less inclined to DIY, Slate will partner with a nationwide network of service locations to perform installations professionally.
Direct-to-Consumer Model:
Slate will sell its vehicles directly to consumers through its website, bypassing traditional dealership networks. This model allows for transparent pricing and a direct relationship with the customer. A refundable $50 vehicle reservation is required to secure a place in line, with first deliveries expected to begin in late 2026.
