MP MaterialsProfile date: 2026-08-31 MP Materials Corp.
Overview and Mission
MP Materials Corp. (NYSE: MP) is an American critical materials company focused on building a fully domestic, vertically integrated rare earth supply chain in the United States. Headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada, the company owns and operates the Mountain Pass Rare Earth Mine and Processing Facility in San Bernardino County, California, as well as the "Independence" rare earth metal and magnet manufacturing facility in Fort Worth, Texas.
Mountain Pass is the only operating commercial-scale rare earth mining and processing site in North America. The company's core mission is to supply critical rare earth elements, refined oxides, metals, and permanent magnets essential for modern electrification, clean energy, industrial automation, defense systems, and consumer electronics.

Operating Model: The "Mine-to-Magnet" Strategy
MP Materials organizes its operations to cover the complete value chain across three sequential stages:
Upstream Extraction (Mining and Beneficiation):
High-grade bastnäsite ore is mined via open-pit operations at Mountain Pass, California. The ore is crushed, milled, and passed through froth flotation circuits to produce a concentrated rare earth mineral slurry and dried rare earth concentrate.
Midstream Chemical Refining and Separation:
The concentrated ore undergoes roasting, leaching, and multi-stage liquid-liquid solvent extraction. This separates the composite rare earth mixture into distinct, high-purity rare earth oxides and chemical salts. The primary economic focus is neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) oxide, alongside heavier rare earth separations.
Downstream Metallization and Magnet Manufacturing:
At the Independence facility in Fort Worth, Texas, refined NdPr oxide is converted through molten salt electrolysis into high-purity rare earth metals and engineered Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) alloy flakes. These alloys are then processed via powder metallurgy, pressing, sintering, and Grain Boundary Diffusion (GBD) into finished permanent magnets.
