Sector Synopsis
Alternative Power Sources
Market snapshot • October 2, 2026
Technology Overview
Electricity demand is climbing fast, driven by AI data centers, electrified transport and industry. That puts alternative power sources at the center of energy strategy. This ebook tracks the full spectrum: solar photovoltaics from silicon to perovskite tandems, onshore and offshore wind, hydropower, geothermal, wave and tidal energy, hydrogen and fuel cells, and advanced nuclear, from small modular reactors to fusion. It also covers the technologies that make these sources dispatchable, including lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow, iron-air, thermal and compressed-air storage, along with the grid software that ties them together.
The companies range widely. National laboratories and applied research networks are pushing cell efficiencies and reactor designs. Oil majors and utilities are rebuilding their portfolios around renewables. Venture-backed startups are scaling batteries, electrolyzers and microreactors. Trade associations, analysts and investors are shaping policy and steering capital. Applications run from utility-scale solar-plus-storage and offshore wind farms to industrial heat, green fuels, off-grid power and round-the-clock supply for hyperscale computing.
