Technology Overview
Libraries are rebuilding their core infrastructure around the cloud, open source and AI, and the organizations in this ebook are doing that work. Library automation covers the systems behind a modern collection. These include integrated library systems and library services platforms for cataloging, circulation and acquisitions, and discovery layers that search print and electronic holdings in one place. They also include resource sharing and interlibrary loan, digital collection management, metadata services and long-term preservation. Increasingly, these tools add natural-language AI assistants, open APIs and hosted SaaS delivery.
The companies here span the whole ecosystem. Commercial vendors supply flagship platforms, discovery services and specialist systems for special libraries, archives and K-12 schools. Open-source communities and support firms maintain Koha, Evergreen and VuFind. Publishers, booksellers and aggregators feed content and licensing into library workflows. Nonprofits, consortia and funders back digitization and preservation. Hundreds of universities, medical schools and research institutes complete the picture as the libraries, data hubs and research communities that use these systems every day.
